Undertaking an SEO program is totally useless if your web site is not search engine friendly. In fact, your first steps along the SEO path should be to make your web site search engine friendly. If your site is not search engine friendly they will not visit and if they do, there is a good chance they will not index any of the unfriendly pages. So how do you make sure your site is search engine friendly?

The first step is to ensure that all the code works as it should. There are two tests you can perform. The first is a W3C compliancy test and the second is to use any one of the programs that gives you a search engine view of your web site. If there are any problems with these two tests then fix them before you do anything else.

The second step, which should be a part of your SEO program, is to ensure that the META tags for page title in each pages header are designed for that page and are not site wide. This ensures that each page is easily identifiable by the search engines. Along with the META tags are the URL’s. Well designed URL’s are those that are keyword optimized and flow through to the pages title.

The final step is your internal linking structure. Having a clear link structure makes it much easier for search engines (and users) to find content, particularly related content. Not only does it make your site search engine and user friendly, it makes it a lot easier for you to work with over time. Having an adhoc link structure can create confusion for you which over time, makes the linkages even more confusing.

There will always be ongoing issues. For example, you should perform regular W3C checks to ensure that everything is still valid. Yes, code can become corrupted. I have seen servers go down for maintenance and when they come back some sections of your code has become corrupted. This is most likely to occur if you are working on your site when the outage occurs – it does happen.

Always run little checks with the search engines to see whether or not pages are still within the index. This can be done by undertaking a search using the page title within the double quotes. This should always return the page at or near the top. If your pages are not found then you need to check them to see whether or not there are problems preventing them from being indexed by the search engines.
